Through my years in different industries I have been worked with different disciplines directly or indirectly. It is difficult to objectively categorize different line of work so here are my own categories:
firmWare
In this category I put code languages as VHDL and Verilog. firmWare are designs towards FPGA, CPLD and ASIC.
hardWare
In this category I put digital and analog design using schematic. Schematic entry tools like Mentor Design Capture and PCB layout like Expedition PCB.
softWare
In this category I put code languages like C and C++. Of course many other candidates fits but I limit the softWare category with compiling languages only.
scriptWare
In this category I put code languages like Tcl, Perl, Python and others non compiling languages..
testWare
In this category I put snerWares from other categories. in this category The main significance of testWare is to test other designs. It can be test equipment (hardWare), verification of VHDL design (in VHDL), hardware validation in lab (in Tcl) or system integration (in C++).
mechWare
In this category I put mechanical details as panels and boxes.
sysWare
In this category I put in system design, realize functions and make decisions like how to divide functions in hardware and software.
docWare
Documentation, specifications and descriptions written in Microsoft Office, OpenOffice, FrameMaker, LaTeX and DoxyGen generated structure.
